Developing a strategy to combat and mitigate the risks of cyber security is a must-do for organisations of today, and is not an area of concern purely for the IT department.
Poor management of advanced digital threats can sometimes result in a loss of company valuation and in some circumstances, the termination of high-level executives, as we have seen in recent corporate cases.
To address the risks associated with cyber threats, we recently partnered the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) to organise a breakfast seminar entitled ‘Cyber attacks: how vulnerable are you?’ that explored the following:
- How are cyber attacks happening and why are traditional defences failing to stop them?
- What can be done to fix the problem?
The seminar was attended by senior finance, accounting and C-suite professionals who gained useful industry insights from our guest speaker, Mr Steve Ledzian, System Engineering Director of Asia of FireEye Inc., a publicly listed US network security company.
Equipped with over 20 years of IT experience, he shared his expertise on how cyber attacks can hurt enterprises, from damaged reputations to loss of productivity, and what finance professionals can do to combat the trends and risks of today’s threat landscape.
With the prevalence of cyber security issues impacting today’s businesses, the delegates also took this opportunity to discuss amongst themselves the strategies to identify and promote effective practices in cyber security.
A panel discussion comprising industry experts and business professionals subsequently debated the topic – Can we ever be safe from cyber attacks?
Sharing their experience with the delegates were:
- Mr Steve Ledzian, System Engineering Director of Asia, FireEye Inc.
- Mr Wong Loke Yeow, Director of Security Solutions and Professional Services Consulting Enterprise Security, Singtel Group Enterprise
- Mr Alvin Ong, Chief Information Officer, Alexandra Health System, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Integrated Health Information System (IHIS)
- Mr James Lee, Director of Finance, The South Beach
We were honoured to have had our very own ACCA Council Member and Director (Financial Services) at The South Beach, James Lee FCCA, who shared his insights as a panelist, drawing from his extensive experience in key financial and managerial roles in leading organisations.
The seminar was well-received by the delegates who appreciated the useful insights and multiple perspectives that helped to foster their understanding of this current hot topic.
Special thanks to the guest speaker and panelists who took time off their busy schedules to share their knowledge and insights with us.
A first for ACCA Singapore, we enjoyed putting together this seminar and hope to see you at future events as we continue to bring you the latest perspectives and insights into the latest issues impacting the business world.
