We are turning 80 this year! We’ve come a long way since 1936, providing business-relevant, first-choice qualifications in accountancy, finance and management to over 24,000 members, affiliates and students in Singapore.

In honour of this special occasion, we spoke to some ACCA members and asked them to share their thoughts on the New Year, as well as the importance of this major milestone.

Let’s hear what they had to say….

What do you look forward to in ACCA SG’s 80th Anniversary?

Darrell Tan, ACCA Member: “I look forward to an increased sense of belonging and camaraderie among ACCA members, especially with the slew of upcoming celebratory events and activities. It serves as a great opportunity for us to look back on how ACCA SG has evolved over the last 8 decades, and celebrate the successes and hard work of members and staff.”

Lee Khai Yew, ACCA Affiliate: “I am looking forward to the ACCA ASEAN Conference to help me better understand what kinds of new skill sets I should equip myself with to best seize the opportunities of the future, as the ASEAN Economic Community comes into fruition. It will be useful in helping me figure out how I can better ‘future-proof’ myself in this dynamic business landscape as I progress in my career.”

Paul Tan, Fellow Member: “As a Fellow member of ACCA, I am very proud that we are celebrating our 80th anniversary this year. In Chinese culture, there is great gaiety when one becomes an octogenarian. And so, I look forward to participating in the celebratory events and activities that ACCA will have in the coming year, where we can proudly showcase our achievements and successes.”

Belinda Young, Fellow Member: “In this special year, I am excited to find out more about the history of ACCA in Singapore, and how we continue to open doors to a myriad of career options across diverse industries for countless aspiring finance and accounting professionals. I also look forward to meeting my fellow successful and inspiring members at the celebratory events and activities that ACCA Singapore has lined up.”

In your opinion, what are some of the challenges ahead in 2016?

Darrell: I foresee the possibility of a slowdown in the global economy, especially with the recent job cuts at major banks. Coupled with increasing job competition, I feel that the ACCA membership is becoming more important than ever for accountants.”

Khai Yew: It is always a challenge for accountants to keep up with the continuous regulatory changes and technical updates in the work that they do. This is an area that ACCA has been a very great help with; ensuring that we stay relevant in the industry – through seasonal workshops and conferences. 2016 will be a challenging and exciting year!”

Paul: “The main challenge that I foresee for myself and my fellow SMPs would be the impact of rising audit thresholds and increased deregulation on the audit profession. To address that, I believe that we could and should evolve and expand our service offerings to further value-add to our clients and their businesses.”
